Nervous

Hey Everyone:

We've started to rearrange Chloe's room, which used to be the guest room, as well as start to get rid of things around the house that we don't use anymore and can give those things to charity. To those of you who know Justin pretty well, it should come as no surprise that he has been reluctant to get rid of any clothes, even t-shirts that haven't been worn in years.

We are both beginning to get nervous, not about the process, but about how our lives will change once Chloe arrives. Even more so, we are nervous about how Chloe's life will change when she comes to live with us. Adopting an Ethiopian child, bringing her to Utah and then having her raised by white parents will not be easy. We just need to make sure that we keep her in contact with support groups and ties to her African culture.

That's all for now.

oh i see how it is. hang me out to dry, huh?
in my defense, i'm a packrat and i like my shirts. it's not much of a defense, but it's a defense nonetheless.

if any of you have any suggestions, or even experience, with transracial adoptions, and would like to share your information, let us know. also, any books on the subject would be helpful.

Pretty soon you won't remember what life was like without her! I'll ask my neighbor about any references on the transracial adoption experience and let you know.

Hello Julee and Justin,
Many people adopt children from other countries and their communities celebrate them just as much as if the parents had given birth to the child themselves. I know of several such families.
As for the packrat behavior, you could always adopt the slow purge. My husband and I are both terrible pack rats so every other month we do "Spring Cleaning" and learn to part with just a little more.
Best of luck to you both on cleaning out your home to make room for Chloe!

A flash of brilliance: you could take the old shirts that he wants to keep but doesn't wear, and you can make a quilt or something out of them! And it can be in Chloe's crib!

Okay, it's not like I personally could actually DO this (at least not without incurring some sort of freak injury) but I could pay someone to do this. And since you are hugely talented, I bet you could do this.

Allegedly, one of my favorite things as a kid was to steal my Grandpa's and Papa's shirts; you know, the ones they wore under dress shirts? I was a kleptotoddler.

quilt: great suggestion, except i don't know how i'd look in a quilt.

spring cleaning? that's a bad word here. i keep everything. forever. :)

thanks Heleen for asking your friend. any help is greatly appreciated. utah is fairly homogenous, with a very small black population and we would very much like to have Chloe be in contact with that population, or some part of it if possible.
